We went and got her blood checked today. Apparently her kidneys are functioning normally. I don't know how accurate the tests are. I don't know what else could cause a child to not pee with normal amounts of fluid and get puffy with extra fluids. Anyone?

Gosh the only thing that comes to mind is, beyond the kidneys, something is causing her body to hold onto it. I mean is she were an adult I would think of sodium, diabetes or something else endocrine sys related ... Normal kidney function huh? Weird.

She had lost some weight when we couldn't get all her food in her. Then I finally got her back up to almost normal and she gained back that lb but now I'm thinking it's water weight. 1 week is awful quick for her to gain a lb. I'll be talking to her pedi tomorrow so we'll see what he thinks. There's *something* wrong with her. I can tell that much. She's also been sweating more and having tons more secretions. Don't know if it's because she's well-hydrated or because she's trying to get rid of the excess. She hardly ever sweats. This is weird.

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe her electrolyte balance is off? And that has caused her to retain water?

Have you tried any new supplements? I know, for example, Fenugreek makes urine smell like Maple Syrup. Also certain vitamins can make urine look dark.

Wish I had more ideas...

The checked her electrolytes and glucose too. No new supplements or meds. Same formula. We added apple juice but I can't imagine that would make her pee LESS.

I'm waiting on her doctor to call me so we can figure out what we're going to do, if anything.

Prehaps avascorner has something....if apple juice is new...maybe something endocrine related?

Hope things get better....

could it be the current heat and humidity? I know I hold onto fluid when it is hot and humid out, then when the heat/humidity go down I am constantly in the bathroom. With the self-regulation issues you have mentioned, this seems to be within the realm of possibilities.

shauna,
I was just doing some research for my own kids and found something interesting...something called Hyponatremia--very low sodium.
"Symptoms of hyponatremia include not passing much urine, headache, confusion, tiredness, and, if very severe, seizure and coma" . Could Charlie have low sodium from being sick recently? Check it out on webmd.
