Her hands don't stink!

Charlie's hands used to smell really bad all the time because she kept them really tightly closed. We'd pry them open to wash them and dry them, but no matter what, they just *stunk*. Like a foot that hadn't been washed in a week. Ewwww.

I don't know when it happened, but her hands don't stink anymore. I'm sure it was gradual...she's slowly learning to open her hands and keep them open.

Ah, the things you take for granted. LOL My child is no longer smelly.

She has hard splints that we are supposed to put on her 8 hours a day, but now they seem rather pointless. The splints keep her hands semi-open, but since she's got them open a lot anyways, I have to wonder, are they even helping her anymore? I took the thumb part of the splints off and just use those, especially on her left hand since she still keeps that thumb tucked in a lot. I'll have to call the OT at Children's to see if they can make her new splints that keep her hands MORE open.

In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can make some cute thumb splints since the velcro on her regular ones is all worn out. I'll post pics if I actually come up with anything!

I remember when my dd had closed fists and we discussed splints, especially her right (she's hemiplegic) I was told it was fat necrosis and did range of motion or ROM exercises, even after they loosened up.

I think the range and hand exercises have done more for her than the splints ever did. Honestly, I didn't even use the splints nearly as much as they said to. They were uncomfortable for her and it was a pain in the butt to put them on. We use soft thumb splints now during the day sometimes, but that's it. I've given up the hard splints entirely. :-)
